Pedestal Bowl with Anthropomorphic Handles

A bronze pedestal bowl of hemispherical form, supported on a circular foot and fitted with two opposing anthropomorphic handles attached to the rim. Each handle is modelled as a stylized human figure with a rounded head and simplified facial features, serving both as a functional grip and a decorative element. The plain body of the hemispherical bowl is complemented by the sculptural treatment of the handles, creating a harmonious balance between utility and artistic expression.
The pedestal bowl displays a well-developed green and brown patina with areas of oxidation and mineral encrustation, consistent with considerable age. Its open bowl, elevated foot, and anthropomorphic handles suggest that it was intended for the presentation or holding of food, liquids, incense, or other valuable substances in domestic, ceremonial, or elite settings.
Comparable bronze vessels have been recorded from Herat, Ghazni, and Balkh in Afghanistan. Similar examples have also been found in present-day Pakistan, particularly in Taxila, Charsadda (Pushkalavati), Peshawar, and Swat, demonstrating the broad distribution of related bronze-working traditions across the region.
