Globular Lidded Vessel with Lotus-Leaf Decorated
Material: Schist stone
Period: Gandharan / post-Gandharan tradition
Date: Tentatively 2nd–5th century CE
Description
A globular lidded vessel of rounded, bulbous form, surmounted by a low domed lid with a broad, flattened circular knob. The vessel is extensively decorated with hand-carved or incised lotus-leaf motifs. On the lid, elongated lotus leaves radiate downward from the upper shoulder, creating a repeating botanical pattern. The lower body is similarly divided into vertical panels by incised lines, with stylized lotus leaves arranged around the circumference. A pronounced horizontal junction separates the lid from the globular body.
The dark, earthy appearance and coarse, tactile surface are characteristic of a carved stone object. The restrained botanical ornament, particularly the lotus motif, provides the principal decorative element and gives the vessel a strong rhythmic quality.
