Ram-Shaped Thara Pathiram (dripping Vessale)
Material: Bronze
Period: Gandhara
Approximate Date: 400 AD
The object is a bronze thara pathiram featuring a distinct ram shape. It consists of a bulbous main body tapering down into a detailed ram’s head on one end, and a wide, flared trumpet mouth on the opposite end showcasing a thick rim and a loop handle attached at the neck.
In Hindu temple worship, this specific vessel is hung directly above a Shiva Lingam. It features a tiny hole at the base or through an animal spout.
When devotees or priests fill the pot with sacred liquids like water, milk, or coconut water, it creates a slow, steady drop-by-drop flow (Abhishekam) onto the deity underneath. Spiritually, this continuous dripping is meant to cool, soothe, and honor Lord Shiva
